The Southwest Formula Mazda Series began in 1998 and continues to grow each year. It is designed to offer FM drivers a season-long competition with year-end rewards. The Series races are held mostly at local SCCA Club racing events. Generally, two Series races are held each Series race weekend (Saturday and Sunday). There are only seven (7) Series race weekends spread out over 7-8 months. This helps to eliminate excessive travel. Competitors in the Series range from 16 to 65 years in age. Some are looking for careers and some are just looking for excitement and fun. At the conclusion of the season, the Southwest Formula Mazda Series holds an awards banquet to distribute trophies, cash, and prizes to the Top Ten Finishers in the Series. Also recognized is the Rookie of the Year and the Masters Champion (45 yrs and older).
Points are awarded in the Series based on the finishing order of each race, counting only the Series competitors starting each event. The two lowest finishes for each driver are dropped when computing year end points. This allows drivers to miss two races if other obligations conflict. Races are usually held at Texas World Speedway in College Station, Tx; Hallett Motor Racing Circuit near Tulsa, Ok; Motorsport Ranch in Cresson, Tx; Texas Motor Speedway in Ft. Worth, Tx; and Motorsport Ranch Houston.
The Series is supported by such sponsors as Goodyear, Taylor Race Engineering, Mazda, Royal Purple, and Ringers Gloves (to name a few). This enables the Series to distribute cash and prizes each year to the Series participants. Tire drawings are held each race weekend. Novice and Hard Charger awards are also presented each race weekend.
The best thing about the Southwest Formula Mazda Series are the drivers. The drivers are fun and friendly and willing to help their competitors.
Points awarded as follows:
